So, today is National Pretzel Day. In the first place, this day began back in 1983 when Robert Walker, former Representative of Pennsylvania wanted a holiday declared for his favorite food.

National Pretzel Day

Are you ready for a warm, salty, and crunchy bag of pretzels or a single pretzel today? Take me out to the ball game. Indeed, peanuts, popcorn and pretzels are some of everyone’s favorite snacks.

No doubt, there are a few different stories floating around about the origin of pretzels. Whether, it is Christian, Dutch, French or Italian, pretzels are a yummy snack.

Fun Pretzel Facts

When biting into a soft pretzel, are you eating the sides first? Did you know most people eat the sides first and save the knot for their last bite. However, some people may do the opposite? Also, most people like toppings. Or, do you like to eat your pretzel, plain? With this in mind, cheese is one of the most popular choices.

And, some prefer mustard or chocolate. Now, many pretzels come with pepperoni or other toppings. Of course, some people go to town and invent their own concoction.

Meanwhile, if you live in Philadelphia; you consume twelve times the national average.

Make Your Own Pretzels

Because there are only a few ingredients needed, you can create your own. Are you ready to get started? First, start with a package of yeast and stir it into warm water. From there, you add a little sugar and salt. Hence, mix thoroughly to get rid of any lumps in your batter.

Now, you’re ready for your last ingredient. Next, add approximately 3 to 3 1/2 cups of flour. If you’re looking to eat healthier, use whole wheat flour. As you’re mixing, make sure the dough is no longer sticky. Once this is complete, you can create shapes either by your hands or with a knife.

In summary, you’re now ready to bake them in the oven. I usually bake mine at 400 degrees for approximately 4 minutes on each side. Of course, make sure you watch closely as you don’t want your pretzels to burn.

Bon appetite!

As always, I welcome your comments.

Happy National Pretzel Day!
