Earth Day

Earth Day was founded in 1970 and we celebrate on April 22 in more than 192 Countries.  Events are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection.   The first Earth Day was effective in raising awareness about environmental issues.  The public has since been involved in protecting the environment.    In the 70’s, a number of important environmental legislation was passed.

Another development was in December 1970 –  the Environmental Protection Agency was responsible for protecting human health and safeguarding the natural environment.

Earth Day has grown and now includes millions of people and nations focusing on clean energy.  Groups that have been fighting for years against oil spills, pollution factors, power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeway, loss of the wilderness, and extinction suddenly realize the importance as they share common values.

Ten ways of making Earth more Eco-Friendly

  1. Wash in cold or warm water.  By switching from hot cycle to warm-cold, we could save up to 100,000 barrels a day of oil.
  2. Recycle newspapers. In addition, there are millions of newspapers printed daily in the USA.  By recycling, we could save millions of trees each week.
  3. Plant a tree.  Planting a tree is good for the air, land and can shade your house saving on cooling and improving the value of your home.  Of course, make it a family day each year to plant a tree.
  4. Buy local.  Buy from the popular Farmers markets and support the local economy.
  5. Adjust your thermostat.  By reducing the temperature one degree in the winter months and summer months, you will save about 10% of your energy use year round.
  6. Turn off your lights when leaving a room.   By doing this you will save money and your house will be cooler.
  7. Maintain your vehicle.  By extending and maintaining your vehicle you will create less pollution.
  8. Fly with an e-ticket.  Also, this saves a lot of paper and the Airline Industry up to three billion dollars a year.
  9. Buy eco-friendly shopping bags.  Furthermore, plastic bags are not biodegradable.  Hence, they are making their way into the ocean.
  10. Telecommute.  In addition, many Employers are now letting Employees work from home part of the week.  By doing so, your saving money on gas.
