Guitar Center Beginnings
When Wayne Mitchell purchased a small appliance and organ store in Hollywood, California; he named the Company, The Organ Center.
So, the story begins in 1964. At the same time, the President of the Thomas Organ Company approached Mitchell to sell a new line of guitars and amplifiers named Vox. Consequently, the timing was in his favor as he was looking to move his store. Also, he gave stock to the old store in guitars and amplifiers and called it The Vox Center. Hence, in the 1960’s, music was becoming popular in guitars and amplifiers.
Growth
Guitars continued to attract musicians all over California. Hence, a second location in San Francisco was open. This store became pivotal in the success with Guitar Centers expansion and that became the home office location. Consequently, Chicago opened a second location which became a superstore carrying everything a musician could possibly want.
In 1983, Wayne Mitchell passed away. When he died, he left behind a skilled and talented management team to continue the growth and success of the company. Hence, in 1985, the flagship location was dedicated to the Guitar Center founder, Wayne Mitchell. The 90’s earned the Guitar Center, the largest Musical Instrument Retailer in the world. As a result, the centers continued to grow. The center went public in 1997.
New Millennium
In the early 2000’s, the Guitar Center reached over 100 stores and has continued to grow. With new acquisitions and good old fashioned customer service, the centers link between musicians and stores continue to prosper.
In conclusion, Guitar Center plans to be around for generations to follow.
